Strategic has extensive experience creating Community Wildfire Resiliency Plans (CWRPs) tailored to a community’s unique values and regulations. We align project objectives with community priorities and environmental considerations to build CWRPs that deliver resilience against wildfires. Our CWRPs use wildfire risk analysis and field-verified stand data to map treatment areas that align with the seven FireSmart disciplines. We use a science-based methodology that blends local and provincial priorities with prevention and preparedness.

What is a Community Wildfire Resiliency Plan (CWRP)?

The overarching objective with a CWRP is to proactively increase awareness, reduce the threat and impacts of wildfire, and enhance long-term resilience. Integrating spatial wildfire risk analysis and field-verified vegetation assessments, we identify and prioritize fuel management units across the landscape and provide achievable recommendations to assist decision-makers in planning their future wildfire preparedness and mitigation efforts.

The CWRP serves as a strategic tool for local governments, emergency responders, and land managers to enhance wildfire resilience across the landscape.

Strategic’s experts turn field data and hazard analysis into site-specific Fuel Management Prescriptions (FMPs). These plans use local fire behaviour factors and fuel-free or low-threat areas to limit fire intensity below 2,000 kilowatts per meter. They reduce risk, aid safe suppression, and align with FireSmart standards, and local wildfire and resource management plans.

What is a Fuel Management Prescription (FMP)?

FMPs and Fuel Treatments are key tools for reducing wildfire risk and enhancing long-term forest resiliency. FMPs identify hazardous fuel conditions and prescribe treatments that reduce potential wildfire intensity below critical surface fire intensity thresholds. This is achieved through detailed desktop analysis of local and provincial data, comprehensive field assessments of fuel types, volumes, and continuity, and the development of treatment units and methodologies that align with BC Wildfire Service guidance and best management practices.

The resulting Fuel Treatments reduce wildfire hazard by decreasing concentrations of dead and hazardous fuels, removing ladder fuels that can carry fire into the forest canopy, and disposing of flammable debris that contributes to rapid fire spread. Together, these activities aim to maintain wildfire behaviour at lower intensities, increasing the likelihood that fires can be safely and effectively suppressed from established anchor points.

Beyond wildfire risk reduction, Fuel Treatments promote healthier, more resilient forests by reducing stand density, removing dead and suppressed vegetation, and encouraging progression to more mature and resilient forest conditions. These improvements support forest health, increase resistance to wildfire impacts, and enhance the forest’s ability to recover and regenerate following a fire event.
